Story Book Day

What is a Story Book Day? x
Many African schools have few or no books and libraries are almost non-existent.  Blackboards are often the only teaching aid and this severely limits learning, literacy and creativity

A Story Book Day is a way for people in a business, organisation or church to help jole rider transform bare library shelves into a world of endless imagination

What happens on a Story Book Day?
People are invited to bring just one or two story books, along with a 50p contribution with each title to help jole rider to transport the books over to The Gambia and to fund librarians and library furniture. They are also invited to write a personal message for the book’s next reader and paste their message inside the book

What can holding a Story Book Day do for us?
A Story Book Day can promote literacy, build the team, fulfil charitable giving targets, work with local schools and raise awareness

How Do I Get Involved?
Please download our iPac to find about how to organise a Story Book Day. Please also see our
Book Spec for our criteria for donated books

Story Book Day is the title of jole rider’s campaign to collect unwanted, quality, storybooks and other valuable reference books, for delivering to schools in The Gambia.

Many Gambian schools have few or no books and libraries are almost non-existent.  Blackboards are often the only teaching aid and this severely limits learning, literacy and creativity.

Story Book Day provides a means by which donors, contributing a few quality volumes, can make an important difference to learning in Africa.

Our printed bookplates, pasted inside each book, carry a special and personal donor’s message for the book’s next reader.

But, we cannot accept all books. The books we are looking for need to fit our Book Spec criteria, to ensure the best outcome for all.

Whilst the focus is on collecting quality books we are also keen to collect a small donation with each title.  This donation not only funds the handling of the books, sorting, packing, cataloging and more, but also helps to establish the libraries and sustain them. For more information on this see our programmes Books4Africa and Learning Development Project

Story Book Day can be held in any location, school, church, or company and at any time of year. Please ask us for details about organising one.

The official date for Story Book Day next year is Friday 28 May 2010
