Books 4 Africa
a Rotary International of Britain and Ireland project
Many African schools have few or no books and libraries are almost non-existent. Blackboards are often the only teaching aid, stunting learning, literacy and creativity
Books4Africa delivers quality and relevant story books, reference books and educational books from the UK to schools in Africa, boosting learning, literacy and creativity and transforming cupboards with a few out of date books into inspiring school libraries.
With every donated book we receive, we also need to receive 50 pence, to fund the book's journey to a school in Africa and help create and maintain a library.
We sift and sort all books before we deliver them to Africa. We only deliver suitable story books, useful reference books, and textbooks which support the school curriculum in Africa. If you would like to donate a book, please first read our Book Spec
Primary schools, secondary schools, businesses and churches can get involved by organising a Books4Africa Story Book Day. Please get in touch to find out more.
Books4Africa began in 2008. Teachers and students of Abbeyfield Secondary School in Chippenham, Wiltshire partnered with their local primary schools to organise a Story Book Day in each of the primary schools. Pupils at the primary schools were invited to select one or two story books from home. The pupils brought the books to school on Story Book Day, with 50 pence for each title. Each pupil wrote a personal message, beginning "I hope you like this book because..." on a bookplate which was then pasted into the front of the book for its next reader in Africa. 2,000 quality books were donated by the primary school pupils and pupils attended the celebratory loading of the container to help pack the books for their journey to Africa. jole rider delivered the books to St Martin's, a small school in Kartong, rural Gambia, creating the school's first library.
